| 8. | Humphrey Madison (2.Thomas2, 1.John1) was born on 25 Apr 1730; died on 12 Sep 1756. Other Events and Attributes:
- Name: Humphrey Madison
- Residence: Nov 1749, Caroline County, Virginia, USA; Humphrey Madison witness to deed Stone to Bowler. This record is among several for other Madisons, such as Roger and Thomas, and helps support the notion that Humprey was in their family
- Property: 3 Aug 1753, Cloverdale, Botetourt County, Virginia, USA; Sold land says on Buffalo Creek in or about Roanoke, VA just north Cloverdale, which was in Augusta County at the time.
- Military: 1756, Bath County, Virginia, USA; Ensign in Dickinson's Rangers of the Virgina Militia
- Probate: 15 Dec 1756, Augusta County, Virginia, USA; Adam Dickinson gave bound for the adminisration of the estate of Humphrey Madison. Security given by Wallace Estill and Daniel Harrison. [Augusta Co., Va, Will Book 2, page 180]
- Civil: Dec 1770, Botetourt County, Virginia, USA; Land bounty granted to Catherine Arbuckle because her father, Humphrey Madison, was killed "in the service of his country" in 1756.
Notes:
Humphrey Madison's origins are obscure. I know of no contemporaneous documentation of his parents. He is almost always presented as a grandson of President James Madison's great-grandfather, John Madison, Jr (1640-1705). Most online trees and stories list Humphrey as the son of John Madison III and John's first wife Eliza Minor (whose origins appear to be completely undocumented). He is listed as a son of John Madison III's brother Thomas in only a couple of resources that I've found, including the 1903 book Reminisces of Eastern Oregon by Mrs. Elizabeth Lord. I've picked Thomas as his father because Thomas was granted custodianship of Humprey's daughter Catherine after Humphrey was killed.
Died:
Died in an "Indian" raid near Fort Dickinson, in what was Augusta County at the time. Capt John Dickinson (Humphrey's brother-in-law) may have been negligent in organizing the defense
Humphrey married Mary Dickinson on 17 Aug 1753. Mary (daughter of Adam Dickinson and Catherine Stephenson) was born in 1725; died after 1797. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
Family/Spouse: Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
